The Thimble.
Last Wednesday I went into town to do some shopping, I went into the Newsagents to pay for the weekly newspapers then carried on to the butchers. Finally I went to the grocers and was on my way home when this man accosted me. He was carrying one of those trays on string around his neck. “Matches and small household wares all going cheap. Was his way of presenting the few goods on his tray? I did not want anything but decided to help the man by buying something from his selection. I took a box of matches and a thimble. Paid him for the two articles and went on my way. On reaching home I put the matches in the draw where I keep such things and the thimble I placed in my sewing chest, the one that stands by the old sewing machine. I gave the articles no more thought.
A few days later I found that one of my shirts had a small rip in the back that needed sewing. I decided to sew the tear by hand. Going to my sewing chest I took a needle and thread when I saw the thimble. Taking the thimble I placed it on my finger, threaded the needle and started to sew. My fingers were nimble and I found that my stitches were small and neat not like my normal repairs. I was now very curious and took off the thimble from my finger. I sewed again this time my stitching was poor large stitches that I know would not hold very long. I placed the thimble back onto my finger. Now my stitches were again neat and tidy.
Taking the thimble after I finished sewing my shirt I looked at it carefully. Engraved on the inside of the needle were a few words engraved. Taking my magnifying glass I looked at the small writing. This is what I read. This is the property of Janefee. Janefee I have heard the name before and started delving into my memory then I placed the name. Janefee was one of the Fairies that I know from Fairyland. I decided to find Janefee to give her the thimble back but also to find the story that must be behind the thimble.
Going into Fairyland I sat myself down under the old oak tree. I did not have to wait long the first of a few Fairies appeared. I called to them and asked if they knew where Janefee was. One of the Fairies kindly went to get Janefee for me. Soon Janefee appeared like all Fairies her dress was richly embroidered with wild flowers. The dress if bought in a human shop would have cost very much money. I asked Janefee if she was missing something? ”No.” came the reply. “I am not missing anything why do you ask Mr. Shaw?” I then showed her the thimble that I took from my pocket. I told her of my using the thimble and of the wonderfully neat stitches that I repaired my shirt with.
Jane fee smiled and took the thimble into hand. “This thimble was given to me while I was at school. It is magic and will fit on the finger of the person that is holding it. She offered me the thimble it was quite small in her tiny hands but increased in size as soon as I held it. I gave Janefee the thimble back and asked her if she knew how it had come into the man with they tray around his neck. One day as Janefee was making a meal a magpie flew into her cottage window and snapped the thimble from the table where she had put it while taking a rest from her sewing. She had not expected to ever see the thimble again not that she was worried as she was quite and expert with needle and thread. Janefee told me to keep the thimble, as she did not really need it she had, had a new thimble made by one of the Leprechauns that live in Fairyland. I still have the thimble and am very pleased if I have to do any sewing my needlework is not as good as Janefee’s but not many humans can stitch as good as I can. Bern
