Old reliable Friends.

The bus showed off in its usual way every couple of seconds it bumped. Either its springs were damaged in some way or another or it should have been condemned many years ago. The usual customers were waiting at the bus stop. To all our surprise a brand new bus pulled in to the bus stop. No one made a move and the driver called out, “what’s the matter don’t you want to go to work this morning. A mad rush to board the new bus, we were not used to such comfort. Deep well sprung seats a sinking in and not one bump did we feel as the wheels went over the many loose stones and the ruts and holes on the roads surface.

Many discussions took place and the general trend was that the old bus was better. Not as much comfort but we were used to its small ways of bumping us about and with the new bus no one had anything to grumble about. The driver must have been listening to our talk or what was left of our usual grumbles. For the next day to our surprise and secret joy the old bus pulled up at the bus stop. The old bus had not lost any of its rattles, shakes, bumps and the odd noises that had accompanied us over the past years. We all deep down in our hearts were extra pleased to see our old friend once again.

Conversation was at its peak as the old bus suddenly shuddered to a stop. All remained seated not one person moved. The driver walked down the bus asking the passengers to walk quietly to the steps and get off the bus.. Don’t panic and leave nothing behind you. He made his way up the stairs to the top deck. Here I could hear him repeating his words to the passengers on the top deck. As soon as the bus was empty the new bus appeared from around the corner. The driver asked us to board the new bus. No one took any notice of the driver. Words flew to and fro, Tomorrow I will walk to work can’t rely on these busses any more. The driver did his best but no one wanted anything to do with the new bus.

People were discussing about busses when from around the corner an old bus appeared it sounded its horn a couple of times and pulled in to a stop near the waiting passengers. The driver of the old bus was seen to write his name on the papers that the mechanic gave him to sign. You can now all board the bus it has been repaired and your firm have been told about the breakdown. You will all get your full wages with these words the passengers got back on board. They could not believe their ears.

Now the old bus still has its knocks, its bumps, and often has to be towed into the workshops and that is how it will remain until a new generation starts work at the factory. The old workers are happy with the bus that has for years been their true companion taking them in all weathers to and from their homes to their work and that is how it will remain until either new workers come aboard or the firm closes down altogether
