Australian Sport

People think Australian sport is a matter of life and death. Rest assured. It’s more important than that

I am the Australian sportsman

I am a Wallaby a Kangaroo

I wear the baggy green with pride

I am a Kookaburra. Roy Cazaly too

I am the kid from the suburbs

Running the concrete park till I bust

I am the boy from Arnheim Land

Taking marks among the dust

I’m the Olympian

Standing before the winners block

I take my place I bow my head

Receive my medal then I take stock

I watch Australia’s great flag rise

My Anthem fills my ears

And before I’ve sung “girt by sea”

My eyes they fill with tears

I am Australian

This medal symbolizes twenty million

Who’ve not seen failure

Long live our sports people

God Bless Australia

Author's Notes/Comments:

'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death.
I'm very disappointed with that attitude.
I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.' Bill Shankly....October 1981
