My grandfather always kept his glasses near him, with the typical string attached from one temple tip to another hanging around his neck. Gold, gold was the color of his glasses with a classy wooden finish in the corners of the crystal`s frame. I remember the first time I saw them, they were big, but not just big, very big. Those glasses were a replacement from others that he had before. In family reunions and grandchild’s weddings, those glasses were always with him, it was not only a belonging, it was a symbol. I remember when his glasses tarnished every cold or hot rainy day or even every sad or happy crying moment; he had a reddish purple special cleaning tissue just for them and not for anything else. Every family member used to make jokes about his glasses and the affection that he had for them even though they were incredibly ugly. My uncles say that there is a legend saying that he doesn’t take of his glasses off, even when showering.
A long time ago, when I was just about to have my 9th birthday, he borrowed them to me, it was a sensation that I`ll forget. They were light, big, warm, blurry but extremely confortable, now I know why he never stopped using them. They felt like cotton balls over my nose and like feathers on top of my ears. My grandfather told me that I was the only one that had ever put on his glasses, unfortunately some years later, I was told that I was not the only one, not even the first one. Twelve, those were the years that lasted around his neck until this past month. He told us in the Sunday family reunion that he was in a party with some of his high school friends and he had a couple of whiskeys and started dancing until he started drinking wine. What happened next? We asked, he said, “I actually don’t remember”, this was usual because my grandfather never drinks wine, he says it makes his head spin and makes him feel dizzy. Now, he has a new pair of glasses, this time more suitable for this century but very juvenile for his age. He doesn’t know where his glasses ended neither his friends but because I know how my grandfather parties, I think he might have given them to the bar tender at the party.
