Forcing the aloe from the peel so desperately,
they ached for something to soothe the burning sun.
And I sucked the bitterness out of the plant alongside them-
to impress, and impress and satisfy.
The heat of our home melted it so quickly-
soaking the scent onto our tongues.
They spit it out then- the green filling the gaps in their teeth.
They must have taunted the roots,
as older boys do-
because they have been cursed ever since.
