You Broke Your Favorite String

You played me like a fiddle,

Strumming it real hard.

You took our vows and broke them,

Said that I was to blame.

I sat here waiting patiently

Just to hear you say my name.

I guess you were never into you and me,

Used me like a tool and left me feeling dirty.

I stayed faithful until the bitter end,

Only to find out you made another “friend.”

While I was fighting for the life we made,

You were busy finding somewhere else to play.

I kept forgiving things I shouldn’t forgive,

Thinking love meant giving all I had to give.

You watched me break and called me insecure,

While hiding all the things I felt for sure.

Every question somehow turned on me,

Like I was wrong for seeing what I could see.

I begged for honesty, you gave me doubt.

I begged you to talk, you shut me out.

I reached for you while you pulled away,

Then blamed my heart for wanting you to stay.

How many nights did I lie beside you

While your mind was somewhere else?

How many times did you say you loved me

While saving pieces for somebody else?

You made me question what was real,

Made me ashamed of what I’d feel.

But a faithful heart should never have to beg

For the bare-minimum love you never gave.

So keep your excuses, keep your lies,

Keep all the stories you revised.

I know the truth I couldn’t face before:

I was knocking on a locked and empty door.

You played me like a fiddle,

But you broke your favorite string.

You thought I’d keep on bending

While you pulled on everything.

But I’m not waiting anymore

For you to finally say my name.

You can hand somebody else the fiddle

I’m done playing your game.

And someday when the room gets quiet

And there’s no one left to blame,

You might remember who stood beside you

Before you threw it all away.

I didn’t lose because I loved you.

I didn’t fail because I stayed.

You lost someone who chose you

Every single fucking day.
