One day to late

They had grown used to who they were,
to the rhythm of passing years,
to weathering storms beside each other,
to swallowing words and tears.
They knew each other's weaknesses,
and where the other was strong.
They knew how to survive together,
even when everything felt wrong.
Somewhere between then and now,
love became something understood—
something that didn't need saying
because surely forever would.
A kiss became a memory.
A touch became something missed.
Two people who once couldn't let go
forgot what it meant to be kissed.
She stopped asking him to hear her.
He stopped noticing she was quiet.
She carried the ache inside herself
and learned how well to hide it.
He had his faults.
She knew every one.
The broken promises,
the careless choices,
the things he'd said,
the things he'd done.
Yet somehow, through every misdeed,
every wound he couldn't see,
she found a place inside her heart
where forgiveness could still be.
She remembered the man she'd fallen for
when the man before her changed.
She searched his eyes for pieces of him
when everything felt strange.
And she waited.
Not because she was weak,
not because she couldn't leave,
but because beneath all the hurt
there was still something she believed.
Maybe tomorrow he'd reach for her.
Maybe tomorrow he'd see.
Maybe tomorrow he'd finally understand
she was all he'd ever need.
Then one ordinary morning,
something stirred inside his heart.
He looked at all those wasted years
and wondered where they'd grown apart.
Enough.
Today would be different.
Today he'd make things right.
He'd bring home flowers,
play their song,
and hold her close that night.
He'd tell her all the things
he should have said for years.
He'd apologize for every time
he'd been the reason for her tears.
They'd talk until the morning.
They'd laugh about getting old.
They'd make up for all the time they'd lost.
There was still time.
Or so he told himself.
He walked through the door
with forever on his mind,
carrying flowers in his hands
and hope he'd thought he'd left behind.
He called her name.
No answer.
He smiled and called again.
But something about the silence
felt different than it had been.
He walked toward the room
where she spent most of her days,
and before he reached the doorway,
his heart began to race.
He rushed toward the bedside.
The flowers hit the floor.
He called her name again
as though she'd answer like before.
But the years had finally taken
what tomorrow couldn't save.
And every word he'd brought back home
had come one day too late.
She was gone.
Alone.
While he had been somewhere else
believing there would always be
another day to find themselves.
Then he saw the paper
still clutched within her hand.
Her final words were waiting
for the man she'd always loved
to finally understand.
His hands shook as he opened it.
"I never stopped loving you.
Not through the silence.
Not through the years.
Not through the nights I needed you
and you didn't know I was in tears.
I forgave the things you did.
I forgave what you couldn't see.
And even when we lost each other,
you never stopped being home to me.
I remembered who we used to be
when that was all I had.
I held tightly to the good in you
when everything else went bad.
I kept believing you'd come around.
I kept believing you'd see.
I kept waiting for the day you'd realize
you were still everything to me.
And if your heart ever finds its way back,
there's only one thing I need you to know
I never stopped loving you.
I never let you go."
He pressed the letter to his chest
and fell beside her bed.
He finally had a thousand words—
and not one she could hear said.
He had spent years looking everywhere
for something he couldn't name,
never realizing everything he needed
had been beside him all the same.
She had loved him through his worst.
Forgiven what he couldn't undo.
Waited through a thousand lonely nights
for the man she once knew.
And it never dawned on him
she was all he'd ever need
until the only thing she left behind
was a letter he could read.
The flowers lay beside her.
Their old song softly played.
He had finally come home ready to love her
and love had finally run out of days.
He thought they could make up
for all the time they'd lost.
He never knew until that moment
what all that lost time cost.
She had waited for him to come around.

He had trusted love to wait.

And the I love you
she'd waited years to hear

came

one day too late.
