Top 5 Things Not to Do While Buying a Used Car

A used car means a car with history, and while a Vehicle Write off check and other inspections can easily reveal the possible issues, you have to take a few problems in your stride in order to get a private mode of transport at a price that is more affordable. Here are top 5 things you should avoid doing while trying to buy a second hand car.

1.

Don't be rude to the owner

It is important to ask the right questions to the owner, but avoid being rude to him. When you first meet the owner, you have to be polite, courteous and friendly. Do not attempt to force your opinion on him or be rude enough to compel him to lower his selling price. Do not even mention the selling price at the outset. You have all the right to make direct questions to him, but have no right to humiliate or insult the owner. If he gets ticked off, he will not be ready for the sale and you will miss a good deal.

2.

Ensure that all the buttons are properly working

Before you take the used car for a test drive, you have to test all the features and buttons and ensure that those work properly. Go ahead to adjust the mirrors and seats, and start testing all the buttons for the mirrors, radio, windows and more. Take a few minutes and ensure that all of them are in good, operational state.

3.

Inspect the steering

Before you drive, you need to check the steering. Lower the car’s windows and then turn the steering wheel the whole way to the left and the right. There should not be any abnormal sounds or a feel like the wheel has to be tugged a lot to be maneuvered. In case of an uneven force or if there is plenty of resistance, the steering might require a brand-new rack, a power-steering pump assembly or new hoses.

4.

Have the windows UP and DOWN as you test-drive

Ensure that you drive the vehicle with its windows closed and open, given that both can be assistive for you in spotting unique problems. Try to listen for any repetitive and abnormal noises. When the windows are UP, you can listen better to any thumping, pinging or piping noises from the engine.

5.

Start the car and open its hood

When you start the car, always inspect the heating system and the air conditioning system. If either of these takes over 15 seconds to work, note that as a problem. Keep in mind that those repairs might be complicated and costly. Next, walk out and then pop the car hood. Even if you do not have the professional expertise of a mechanic, you have to look at the sounds, leaks and level of fluid. When the car is still running, check the level of coolant and any build-up of oil around the engine. Check whether there is any rattling, ticking or any other unusual sound.
