Chirping
Once upon a time when there was nothing but darkness, and the celestial Gods wandered through the circular mass they had created, an unexpected thought came to them. With nothing yet living there, they started planning what elements and creatures to add and where to put them. One of them thought the earth looked dull, so he decided to make it shiny, like him. Another one thought it looked empty and sad so she made it colorful and happy like her, adding mountains, rivers, forests, and deserts, a diversity of colors that matched each one of his moods and feelings. The last one felt it was too quiet, so he added waterfalls, rivers, lakes and oceans, and an explosive touch, which became volcanoes. This took them two days and all their strength. When they were finished and were admiring their final product, they heard something that they had never heard before, a quiet but noticeable chirping sound was coming from one of the millions of bushes they had created. At first they blamed the youngest god, he was a prankster and liked to add things to their creations without telling the others first. However, he was as surprised and intrigued as the others. After looking through every bush in the area, they found a strange little green creature hiding there.
“What are you?” they asked.
“I don’t know, you created everything around me, didn’t you?, You should know what walks through your creation.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, two days ago everything was darkness and quiet, and now there is color, light and sounds”
“Wait, you were here before all that?”
“You gods, always thinking only about yourselves and what you’ll create next, never having the time to analyze what is already there”
“Are you making fun of us? We are aware of what lives, breathes or exists in our creations, nothing ever goes unseen.”
“Well you didn’t see me. Am I that small? Or maybe I’m very silent when i “exist”, then you can tell me, what am I?.”
The gods looked at each other, astonished at the attitude of the unknown creature.
“Maybe we don’t want to tell you what you are. You’re hideous, not beautiful as the things we create.”
“Well, then I’ll help you, I’m a cricket and thanks for all the new nature and space for me to move on. I was getting tired of just seeing dark everywhere I turned.”
“You’re very welcome” the oldest god said.
“You haven’t even seen what we were planning to add next, enormous, powerful, fast and dangerous creatures. They’re our ultimate experiment, we’re calling them humans.”
“That sounds fascinating, maybe you can make them a little bit smarter than you, respectful and self conscious about the land in which they live.”
“We’ll try our best.”
The cricket decided to turn around and continue his adventure discovering this new world. The gods asked it if they were going to hear about him again, to which he answered that his chirping sound is the source of his happiness, and as long as it continues chirping the Earth will stay healthy.
