REFUSAL

Like an old caged bird he refuses to fly away
Through the door was inadvertently left open,
His will to fly long erased from memory
Eclipsed by a staid acceptance of his plight,
Thus he dawdled in the loneliness of his room
Deep within the sanctum of the nursing home
Still clinging desperately to the last vestiges of life
Words forgotten to songs unremembered
Dreams he once held sacred now elapsed
Refusing doggedly the call of the reaper,

Spurning the whispering at his door.

I certainly agree with

I certainly agree with SSmoothie's assessment of this poem---it is one of your most compelling because it bravely faces and presents a future situation that could happen to all of us who reach old age, or senior status, or whatever it is properly called presently.  When I joined PostPoems more than two decades ago, I could not have really imagined what your poem has so adroitly described:  now that same situation stares me in the face and sticks its tongue out at me in mockery.

Wow, this is so powerful and

Wow, this is so powerful and emotive... it just rocks you and picks at your core. A plain truth held in a brilliant set of metaphors and similies.   A brilliant and sobering write about clinging to life at any cost, especially when so many these days are too willing to let go despite the cost... yes this is one of your best. Congrats. Hugss
