Cantankerous Critic's Credo Compelled To Crescendo, 1

Dear God, grant us a swift delivery

from unskilled verbiage and its tyranny;

and two to name here, most especially:

making present to mean past tense with "did";

and all those gerunds, yes, the "i n g"---

of all these stumbles may we soon be rid.

Restore to us the civil courtesy

and heritage to its propriety,

so that devotion to real poetry

is not whored.  Grant that reasoned artistry

returns to value to skill; and, in conclusion,

let violators (in their rank profusion)

discover that good verse is written, still,

with a full measure of literate skill.
