"We have left the land and have gone to sea! We have demolished the bridges behind us, indeed, we have destroyed the very land behind us! Now, little ship, watch out! Beside you lies the ocean: it is true that it does not always roar and from time to time it lies spread out like silk and gold and reveries of goodness. But hours will come when you will realize that it is infinite and that there is nothing more terrible than infinity. Oh, the poor bird that had felt its freedom and now pushes against the walls of this cage! Woe, when you are assailed by homesickness for the land, as if there more freedom were to be found – and there is no 'land' any longer."
